Shoplifting is charged as a form of larceny in Virginia, with penalties varying in severity depending on the value of goods allegedly stolen. Taking goods valued at less than $200 is considered Class 1 misdemeanor petite larceny, carrying up to 12 months in jail and fines up to $2,500. Taking more than $200 worth of goods escalates these charges to felony grand larceny, carrying anywhere from 1 to 20 years in jail upon conviction.
